SAME Highlights

  • In July, we celebrated the induction of over 75 kindergarten Dreamers with our annual induction ceremony.
  • In November, An Achievable Dream Certified Academy students met with Dr. Vreeland via Zoom for the first President’s Advisory Council meeting. Students defined leadership, learned a little more about their position as leaders in the school, and enjoyed the conversation with Dr. Vreeland. They were excited about the next steps with their position!
  • In November, K-5 students participated in an on-campus pumpkin patch. After receiving their mini pumpkin, students completed science focused lesson activities.
  • Fourth-grade students participated in the Gardenfest of Lights celebration at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Students created ornaments to illustrate the rainforest food chain, which was displayed on a tree in the Lora Robins Library.
  • Girls on the Run, an AAD-sponsored club, celebrated the end of its fall session with a 5K race. Students ran with a sponsor as they celebrated the completion of their fall content. Girls participated in activities designed to increase self-esteem and confidence.
  • In February, K-5 students participated in World Read Aloud Day. Renowned children’s literacy specialist, Lester Laminack virtually read some of his favorite picture books to our Dreamers and other students worldwide! Students also received one of the books showcased in this presentation!
  • In March, K-5 students celebrated Read Across America Day with a virtual read-aloud from the world-renowned author, Alice Walker, who shared her book, Sweet People Everywhere.
  • In March, students attended a field trip at Virginia State University. They toured the campus, met the president, and participated in a town hall luncheon with alumni Keziah Scott.
  • In March, students participated in “Hokie Day” with Virginia Tech students and staff. The students were engaged in various hands-on activities designed to encourage and support college readiness.
  • In June, HSES students, staff, and families celebrated fifth-grade Dreamers during their graduation ceremony. Students received special awards, sang inspirational songs, and fellowshipped with their classmates.
